Kate Moore’s writing journey begins long before she types a single word.

“There is definitely an ‘approach’ phase to writing a new book,” she explains. In that phase, “a story idea works the way static electricity collects bits and pieces that cling to fabric.”
Characters, settings, and small details gather in her sketchbooks. “I fill blank pages in big sketch books with whatever I know about the idea or the details. Usually, there’s a character or two in the mix, and while they chat in my head, I eavesdrop on their conversation and make notes.”
Once that electric buildup feels complete, Kate moves into crafting. “I’m a craft junkie. I’ve read the books, gone to the workshops, and listened to hours of craft talk. I still do. It’s all about how to make an idea work, how to give a story the emotional punch you want it to have.”
With over twenty novels written, she knows exactly which tools to reach for when she hits a snag or when she needs Laurie’s marketing guidance from the Visible Author Method coaching program to sharpen her approach.
Kate’s themes and characters grew from her early experiments across genres, “like deciding on a Halloween costume. I could be this or I could be that.” But after reading every Jane Austen novel, she found her true path.
“She (Jane Austen) was born 250 years ago, but she knew my world, and she opened my eyes to its characters and how they interacted and what was important to me and who I wanted to be in that world.”
Today, she writes “Austen‑inspired” stories, not fan fiction or retellings, but fresh tales of women asserting their worth in worlds that overlook them. Her most recent heroine is a separated parent with a seven‑year‑old, ghosted by a dating‑app match, proof that Kate brings both heart and humor to modern challenges.
Looking ahead, Kate is putting the finishing touches on that Christmas novella about her separated mom. She’s also revising the first book in a spin‑off from her Duke’s Men trilogy: The Lady and the Thief, The Raven’s Lady, and The Lady and the Secret Lord. “The new series will feature three ordinary young women friends from 1835 who discover unexpected ‘superpowers’ as they meet and fall in love with powerful men. I’m playing with some favorite tropes: he falls first, fake relationship, and enemies to lovers. It’s all fun!”
Her advice to aspiring authors is straightforward:
“Write every day that you can. Revise a lot. Find the people who can help you see what’s working in your story and what isn’t. Don’t let the competitive marketplace daunt you. Know there is an audience for your book because there are readers just like you. Persist. And yes, learn to write a great newsletter that connects you with your readers.”
When asked about the role of reading in her life, Kate sums it up with her personal motto: “D.E.A.R.: Drop Everything and Read. A good book is a Samwise for your Frodo, a steadfast companion for life’s messy quests.” To her, a good book is more than an escape; it’s a workout for the heart and mind that builds empathy and gives strength to face life's challenges.
With her signature blend of careful craft and inspired spontaneity, Kate Moore continues to create stories that comfort, excite, and empower readers. Her novels invite us to believe in the magic of a well-told tale, a reminder that sometimes the smallest spark can light the way through even the darkest days.
